As we all know, the eye color you were born with was the color you were stuck with forever. But now, for the first time ever, science has given us a way to change that — and we’re not talking about colored contact lenses either.
If you’ve ever wanted to have Leonardo DiCaprio’s steely gaze or Angelina Jolie’s sultry stare, a new laser treatment could be the answer!
California-based company Stroma Medical has reportedly developed a new technique that uses lasers to permanently change the color of your eyes. Due to the nature of the procedure, Stroma is only able to change brown eyes to blue (and not the other way around), but the treatment is completely non-invasive, and can apparently be performed under 1 minute.
Dr. Gregg Homer, the company’s founder, said that there is no actual blue pigmentation in human eyes. Rather, the idea is that a blue eye exists under every brown eye. It’s just a matter of dealing with the thin layer of pigment that separates the two to make the blue eye come to surface.
The fundamental principle is that under every brown eye is a blue eye. The only difference between a brown eye and a blue eye is this very thin layer of pigment on the surface. If you take that pigment away, then the light can enter the stroma—the little fibers that look like bicycle spokes in a light eye—and when the light scatters it only reflects back the shortest wavelengths and that’s the blue end of the spectrum,” as Stroma’s chairman Dr. Gregg Homer told CNN.
So how exactly does it work?
The procedure only takes about 20 seconds, results will become apparent until several weeks after, when the body has had ample time to remove the dead pigment layer. After that, you’ll have baby blues for the rest of your days, with no contact lenses required.
Stroma Medical, on the other hand, is confident that complications (if there are), are likely short term and will easily be remedied. Homer, on the other hand, is more focused on addressing the needs of those who want to have blue eyes, no matter their reasons.
Stroma Medical’s laser procedure is still not available in the United States, but it is expected to cost about $5,000. In Costa Rica, 20 patients have undergone surgery while 17 in Mexico will soon have natural-looking blue eyes, for blue eyes are undeniably STUNNING!
