Indian Man Killed By A Falling Meteorite

Indian authorities declare that a man was killed by a falling meteorite in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. It has been reported that a huge object had drop from the sky on Saturday, creating an explosion in the Bharathidasan Engineering College that killed the man and injured three other people. CNN reported that the falling object’s impact broke several nearby windows and left a crater with a couple feet deep.

Nevertheless, it is still yet to be verified if the object is actually from space. According to the Chicago Tribune, authorities have accepted the meteorite theory after no proof of explosives was discovered. Dirt will be examined by the researchers of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics to see if it really comes from a meteorite. It is possible that the object is some form of space debris and if it would be proven that the cause of that man’s death is an object that comes from space, then it would be the first thing that ever happened in history.

No human in the past decades was reported to have been killed by a falling meteorite ,” says NASA.

Yet, a meteorite impact like this would be a remarkably unusual occasion. Many little meteors that drop on Earth burn up and shatter entirely in the Earth’s atmosphere. If there is a meteor large enough, some of it will get through, thus becoming a meteorite. But usually, these “leftovers” will just fall into the ocean, as most of the Earth’s surface is covered in water. The likelihood of one striking on humans are extremely rare, based on NASA.

Although, it’s not impossible to happen, NASA notes that a meteor of over 82 feet could cause a “local damage to the impact area”.
